Social Security to transition to Login. gov

Social Security announces changes influencing millions of account holders

The Social Security Administration is changing how people who get benefits can use the Internet.

The Social Security Administration said that people who signed up for “my Social Security” online before September 18, 2021, will soon have to switch to a Login.gov account to continue using online services.

Account holders are asked to sign in to make the change. Once they do this, they will be allowed to switch to a Login.gov account. When the user’s new Login.gov account is properly linked, a confirmation screen will show up. They will then be able to use Social Security’s online services right away.

SSA says that more than five million account users have already switched to a Login.gov account. People who already have an account on Login.gov or ID.me don’t need to make a new one or do anything else.

The agency said in a news release that switching from old SS accounts to the new Login.gov will “simplify the sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to online services.” People who get Social Security benefits can use online services to get a new card, handle their benefits, get an idea of how much they will get in the future, check on the status of an application, and more.

Commissioner of Social Security Martin O’Malley said, “My Social Security is a safe and secure way for people to do business with us.” “We are excited to switch to Login.gov for accessing our online services. This will make the process easier for the public across all agencies.”
