This week, the state of Michigan started sending tax credit refund checks to about 700,000 low-income people. The checks are for people who got the Earned Income Tax Credit in 2022. They are worth an average of $550 each.
A state law passed in March of last year raised Michigan’s Earned Income Tax Credit from 6% of the federal tax credit to 30%. This is why the checks are being sent out.
Which person will get a check?
People who qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit in 2022 will get the money. This credit is meant to help people in the state who have jobs but don’t make much money. The credit amount is based on the family’s income and the number of children who rely on them.

Married people with three kids who made less than $59,187 a year were eligible for the 2022 tax year. People who didn’t have kids and made less than $16,480 a year could qualify.
How much money could I get?
The most the Michigan EITC can be is 30% of the federal credit, and it changes every year depending on inflation.
As of 2022, people who were qualified for the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit and claimed it already had a 6% credit added to their tax return. The checks that were mailed this week will add to the tax refund by the last 24 percent.
The check should be around $550 on average.

When should I expect to receive my check?
Beginning this week, the Michigan Department of Treasury will mail the checks in chunks over the next five to six weeks.

What must I do?
Paper checks will be sent automatically to qualified taxpayers. They don’t need to do anything else. Workers who turned in their 2022 tax returns will help the Michigan Department of Treasury figure out who can get a check.
People who have moved can make sure the check goes to the right place by updating their address.
