The Edmonton Oilers staged a thrilling comeback in Game 1 of their playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night, securing a dramatic 4-2 victory. Heading into the third period, the Oilers were tied 1-1 and needed something to ignite their efforts. That spark came just 57 seconds into the final frame when Leon Draisaitl scored his fourth goal of the playoffs, bringing the game to a 2-2 tie and rejuvenating the Oilers bench.
Sixteen minutes later, Zach Hyman became the hero, scoring the game-winner with a laser shot that zipped past Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill’s glove-side. This goal, Hyman’s third of the playoffs, was part of a four-goal surge that completed the Oilers’ comeback, marking their fifth consecutive victory in a postseason game where they trailed entering the third period.
According to Athlon Sports, “Hyman’s goal also helped Edmonton make some NHL history as it became the first team in NHL history with five consecutive comeback wins in a single postseason.” The Oilers had also trailed in three of their four wins against the Los Angeles Kings in the previous round.
In addition to the team’s success, individual players reached significant milestones. Draisaitl passed the legendary Wayne Gretzky for the fifth-most game-tying goals in Oilers playoff history, now with nine. Meanwhile, Connor McDavid, the three-time MVP, achieved two career milestones of his own. McDavid became the second-fastest player in NHL history to reach 90 career assists in the playoffs, accomplishing this in just 81 games.
The only players to do so faster were Gretzky (63 games) and Mario Lemieux (97 games), both Hall of Famers. McDavid also tied for fourth place for the most consecutive postseasons with 10 or more assists, trailing only Gretzky, Jari Kurri, and Mark Messier.
As the series continues, the Golden Knights will look to rebound in Game 2 on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. ET, airing live on ESPN.
