Social Security payment check on July

July 2024 Social Security Payment Dates and What to Watch For?

Pay from Social Security comes the month after the month for which it is due. The money you get in July is for you to use in June. Most people get that payment on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, but there are a few people who don’t.

In July 2024, these are the times that Social Security will pay out.

Do you know how the Social Security payment plan works?

The date you get paid for retirement benefits or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is based on your birthday. If you get what Social Security calls “auxiliary benefits” based on someone else’s earnings record, like a widow benefit or a spouse benefit, your payment date is based on their birthday, not yours.

Here’s how it works:

  • If the birthday is on the 1st through the 10th, you are paid on the second Wednesday of each month.
  • If the birthday is on the 11th through the 20th, you are paid on the third Wednesday of the month.
  • If the birthday is on the 21st through the 31st, you are paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Why do payments go out on different days?

In June 1997, the Social Security Administration (SSA) put in place this stepped plan. Everything used to be paid out on the third of every month, but as the number of recipients grew, that became too much to handle.

People who began getting benefits before May 1, 1997, still get paid on the third of every month. The third is also the date that these groups of Social Security recipients get paid every month:

  • Those who live abroad.
  • Those enrolled in Medicare Savings Programs, which provide state financial help for paying Medicare premiums.
  • Those who collect both Social Security and SSI, a safety-net benefit administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) for people with low incomes and limited financial assets who are age 65 or older, blind, or have a disability. If you are in this group, you get your SSI on the first of the month and your Social Security on the third.

Social Security has an online calendar showing all the payment dates for 2024.

What else do we need to know about when to get my Social Security check?

Checks are no longer sent by Social Security. Your benefits will be sent to you by direct payment or a Direct Express debit card on the due date.

If your pay date is on a weekend or a government holiday, you will be paid on the first business day before that that isn’t a weekend, holiday, or Saturday.

The SSA says that you should first check with your bank or other financial company if you don’t get your benefit on time. They may be taking too long to make the payment. Call Social Security at 800-772-1213 or go to your local SSA field office to report a payment as late, lost, or stolen.
